How Your Insurance Works
Dental insurance is highly complex and creates confusion for many patients. There are many ways insurance plans are designed, each with differing benefit (payment) levels. Dental insurance is not meant to be a pay all, but designed to share in your dental care costs.
Dental insurance is a contract between your employer and the insurance company. Benefits are based on which plan benefit your employer purchases on your behalf. The goal of the insurance company and your employer is to provide basic coverage for specific procedures and services to keep the premium cost down. Therefore, the services that are paid for are based on the cost of the policy to your employer and not what may always be best for you or your oral health. Most insurance policies are based on the American Dental Association recommendations for general dental basic care. The reimbursement mechanism from your insurance company is merely a mathematical formula they use to determine the amount of benefit or percentage of the service that will be paid.
Some services you may need or want may not be covered by your dental policy. The selection of non-covered services is chosen by your employer and your insurance company.
Please remember you own your policy and it is a benefit to you, we are not a party to the contract between your employer and your insurance company.
